Fuel Shut-off

This is an IH240. Should I shut the fuel off and let the engine die or use the key and then shut off the fuel? I always run the generator and chainsaw until they die so that the gas is out of the carb. Am I hurting the 240 by letting it run out of gas a couple of times each week?

It's when the chainsaw runs out of fuel it can hurt them. At WOT and under load, they will run lean and could score a piston. Lean is mean.

Shutting off the fuel and running her until dying will not hurt a 4-cycle engine. A 2-cycle such as your string trimmer or grass blower uses oil/gas mix and it will hurt them over time to do this.

How could it possibly hurt a 2-cycle to shut off the fuel to kill it? Don't understand that one, I guess.

Cuz it's running dry with no fuel. But I have always run my chainsaws that way. I wear out lots of chains and bars but the engines never fail.

Ever been in a two lunger?

Runnin' dry just wouldn't be in the stars, don't think. More residual oil in those things than you can imagine. :>)

I can't say as it would make any difference. Shutting off the fuel is good idea but many of us don't do it.
