New 856 with future projects

This weekend I picked up an (unknown year) 856 for $3500, its got a loader and cab, liquid in and weights on the back tires. Not the prettiest tractor ever but it made the 27 mile drive home. I knew it would have some 'quirks' to deal with. It's a Cozy Cab, Koyker K5 loader, 1000rpm pto only.

I read through posts back to Jan '06 before posting my questions, I am sure a little more time on here and I'll find solutions to my questions.

Tractor Vet posted the following list of things to check on a new tractor in another thread.
I look at things like. How much slop is on the clutch pedal
Works Great

Brake pedals
Stops on a dime

How wobbly is the seat suspension
Not wobbly but my 245lbs does bottom it out

How are the tires
Like new condition but have been sitting for an extended period of time

Sheet metal No fenders (has cab) needs paint

Condition of the paint
Hard to tell under all the diesel grease but I think it could use a coat

Does all the lights work
No lights work

Does it shift easy
I think the shifter linkage needs to be rebuilt or rebushed

Does the T/A work .
In high range yes, but when the lever is pulled back and trying to start or slow speeds up a hill in a lower gear it will slip

Projects that I need to work on
Hydraulic fluid leaking from up top of the transmission somewhere, hard to tell with Cab in the way, but it looks like its the hydraulic hoses going to the hydraulic steering box.

TA does not seem to work in low range.
Tach does not work, I tightened down the cable end up on the drive (left front of motor) and it worked for about 30 seconds until I hit the throttle, then it quit working again.
Cab is missing 3 windows (no biggie, I'll get some cut by a glass shop)
No lights, the housings are there but no wires connected. I'm not overly worried about this, I've got a plan.
Fuel filters (maintenance).
Sheet metal is 'mostly' there but not bolted on.
I'd like to rebuild the shifter, the H/L/R 1/2/3/4 levers seem very lose on the shaft.

If anybody can assist me in finding resources on how to rebuild the shifters and where to get parts I'd appreciate it. I also need an ignition switch with key. And to know how some of you connected your loader to the onboard hydraulics. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a 540/1000 PTO but that can wait. Before I do too much with the TA I am going to find information about adjustments and testing procedures and secure a factory manual.

Sorry for the long post and no pictures but I wanted to try to accurately describe my situation.

This tractor is taking over bale and snow moving chores from my '51 CoOp E4, which I will retire to light duty work and tractor pulling.

thanks for reading and in advance for any help.

They are a pretty good tractor, yours sounds like it needs a few things. Some people remove the cabs and add the flat top fenders instead. Fenders can be found at salvage yards. The loader is worth at least half of what you paid for it if it is in decent condition. Does it have a three point hitch?

Its got a 3pt hitch that looks just like the one my neighbor had on his 806gas, The tractor has about 11k hours (hour meter quit working at 9k), rebuilt injector pump, the loader has been repaired (farm repair) I dont know what they tried to "move" with it but whatever it was exceeded the capacity of the loader, I looked up the specs on the loader and its rated lift capacity is 4000lbs with breakaway at 4530lbs and I doubt my 800-1100lb bales will ever get that heavy. This tractor is definately a "workhorse" and not a "parade" tractor.

I dont like the looks of the cab, but my Dad says after a couple trips down the driveway with the heater on, and a snow blower tossing the white stuff at -10F, I will be happy its on there, However without the cab I think it will fit in my shop, so only time will tell. Last Winter I borrowed the neighbors 806 (gas) with flattop fenders and snow blower, I didnt get terribly cold but I"m going to give this cab a try.

The tractor works (most important feature), and I knew it had issues before agreeing on a price. I look forward to working on it.

I almost bought a 706 with 3pt, running on 4 out of 6 cylinders, no cab, no fenders, not run in the last 6-7yrs for $3300. Maybe next year, I"ll have to negotiate a lower price though :) (my cousin owns is and is not in a rush to move it)

Do I get shifter rebuilt/rebush kits from a dealer or are there any aftermarket available?

thanks again,
-ron
