I am new to tractors and just received a tractor with a small farm that we purchased. It is a 1952 Farmall M and I have just ordered the owners manual from binder books. Before I get the book I will probably be using the tractor and it seems to run great. I do not know what type of fuel this tractor takes and I don't want to put in the wrong fuel, can someone please help me?

Thanks, that is what I thought but I didn"t want to add 87 to a diesel, and since mine is just an M and not MD I should be good to go.

The manual won't do you any good because the fuel specs have changed in the 50 years since it was originally printed.

If it's a gas, kerosene, or "all fuel" model, just use plain old 87 octane pump gas. It'll run fine, and run forever. Do not bother with "lead substitue" or other snake oil concoctions, because they don't help. Do not bother with higher octane, as octane does nothing for power, and is not a substitue for lead. Octane only keeps you from hammering holes in the pistons of a high-compresison engine. Your M is a low-compression engine.

just plain gasoline. They were designed to run on leaded regular but of course you can't buy that anymore. Unleaded regular is fine. They will burn E-10 too.
