dave i thought you were right so i looked it up and the non diesels have the same timing gear setup as the diesels do, so the gas distributor turns the same way as the diesel ones, but the advance is altogether different. dave you might someday be wrong but not today, randy

We had a T9 crawler that we changed from mag to dist. It ran terrible until we figured out that the 9s took a counter clockwise distributor. Put the correct one on and it ran fine.

Since I have been a IH mechanic for over 40 years, I can assure you all, that all of the GAS starting DIESEL motors that IH built have Hyd. pump and distributor turning counter clockwise, and all the GAS motors turned clockwise. and thats a fact.

After several days checking this out, you are dead wrong the W9 600 650 gas engines turn same dirrectin as diesel.

Hi, On the H,M,and later series gas engines the cranksaft gear drives the camshaft gear, therfore the distributor rotates clockwise. On the W9 gas and all the diesels there is an idler gear between the crank and cam gears so they have a counterclockwise rotation.

I had two WD-9 tractors, the magnetos had the impulse clicking in the wrong direction for a gas engine...

Randy,

Would you care to explain why the diesel tachs are scaled counter-clockwise and the gas tachs are clockwise? And why is the gear that drives the service meter pitched to the left on one and to the right on the other. And why won't a diesel hydraulic pump work on gas motor?

Found some pictures of W9 600 and 650 with live hydraulic pumps. Looks like the suction line is to outside of pump away from engine block on both tractors which leads me to belive they turn same dirrection. Gas I can tell for sure in picture, diesel not as clear. But if gas suction is to outside thats turning same dirrection as say a SMD pump.

My 650D is at a neighbor's house splitting wood. I can check tomorrow on the hoses. No, I am not using the distributer pump for that work. It has the largest Prince PTO pump and cycles my splitter very quickly at just over idle. It is very easy on fuel.

I can say for sure that the tach is scaled counter-clockwise. That is opposite of the gas tractors that I own.

Wardner Just a thought, if you have both a gas and diesel in the 9 series type engines the answer could be in looking at # one spark plug wire on cap and then see which side of # one the next cylinder that fires is on. If they're on same side they would turn same direction and if not the opposite direction. If 9 series gas engines turn distributor same direction as diesel or not is only thing I've been trying to get definite answer on.

Thanks Randy, but have found information that is saying both ways. So I can't say one way or other. You can always learn something on here, sometimes the hard way.
