Can anyone tell me when IH changed from one-piece to split rear wheel weights? Was it year specific, or associated with a certain model? Was there a considerable overlap?
Thanks,
Leo

Bought a Farmall 230 (1957 model) at auction in 1965 that had the split weights likely as original equipment.

I dont know if or when they were made i just bought some at an auction. I pull the NATPA pulling circuit and i have 3/4" allthread through the hubs that extends far inside the tire and those weights can be installed inside the tire on the allthread without removing the wheel, and for those who dont know why you need so many weights, just think of how many weights i put on my 400 to pull the 12,000 pound class but with enough power you can just keep throwing weights on a tractor.

This should be an easy one for those who have used them, but how many know why the split weights came about?

Why?

I can't speak for others but I use them exclusively for mounting on the inside. It saves me the trouble of removing the wheel.

Why the inside?

I have five tractors that are heavily weighted. They are running between 12 and 16 weights each. If I stacked them on the outside, they would present a clearance problem in close quarters.

I made a tool that mounts on the axle and holds the one peice weights in place while I shove the bolts thru. I only use four long bolts per side.

Wardner, you are correct sir. What are you pulling that requires so much weight?

I am not a farmer nor a puller although I did pull for a couple of years several times a year. I used to be a contractor. There have been times when I had three tractors working on separate jobs.

I hate tire slippage. It means that I did not bring a big enough tractor or I will need to rent one. The tractor with the most wheel weights is the lightest; that would be my F504. People have warned me that I would wreak it with so much weight. That hasn't been the case with twenty years of good performance.

The full and split weights are a perfect fit on the C through the 560, maybe later.

Just for the record, the split weights will readily interchange with the one piece weights. I have a set of the split weights on one of my Hs.

Harley, my loader tractor has been recieving several new names lately, none of which should be mentioned here, but yes, the weights can be mixed, I have the split weights mounted first, and a set of the one piece weights mounted on top of those. I would like to have a third set, but I can't seem to find any at a price I feel is reasonable.
