My 656 gas has had a knock for about 2 years now. I have adjusted the valves and still does it. I am getting ready to tear down the engine. Any suggestions where to look? Thanks

It"s called piston slap, too much clearence between piston and cyl sleeve. If knock has gotten noticeably louder, piston skirt is broke. Check piston and sleeve clearence on OH reassembly

We have a 656 our loader tractor in the (Salvage yard) That had knocked for may years. When I pulled it down, the timing gears were pitted up. Every other parts in the engine were fine.

Either a scored sleeve or just a well woren piston sleeve assemblly. Been there done that. My 706 had a knock for 2 years, piston slap, when it warmed up it quieted down. Pulled it apart last winter and replaced the scored piston and sleeve and its quiet now, at least for a little while until it cooks itself again.

More than likely it's a wrist pin. Those engines are good for that, they've got tiny wrist pins. I'd pull it down, could really be anything.

Is the noise at all speeds, or moreso at one particular rpm? Is it at the front or rear of the engine? Could it be loose flywheel / clutch department mounting bolts? Is the noise the same with the clutch depressed? How many hours since an overhaul? Could be pistons getting sloppy & out of shape in the bores-- excessive taper or that sort of thing. What happens if you pull a plug wire or two? does the knock get worse-- better? Try to isolate where the noise is coming from.

The first things that come to mind is rod bearing or a wrist pin at least that"s where I"d look. Brian

Could be timing gears.
