Talk about not thinking, I did it yeaterday. I give the cows apples in the corner of the barn yard, but it was raining and they were in the barn so I got a 5 gallon pail of apples and walked into the cow shed to dump them in the manger..about 30x40 shed, I got the apples dumped along the manger, but I didn't make it out..it was a nasty 10 seconds getting crushed between several cows the bull and the wall..ya just can't rollerskate in a buffaloe herd..nor kin you walk out of a herd of apple crazy cows..Now that was downright dangerous and stupid..what was I thinking??? anyway it won't go down like that again

So that must be why we had a couple of Gravestine (SP) apple trees in the front pasture when I was a boy. My mother rented the land to an adjacent dairy farmer. The trees were large and probably 75-100 years old. They could have been planted around 1860.

The land was taken for a school 40 years ago.

I wonder if the apples improved the quality or freshness of the milk.

The orchard was never grazed. Remants of barbed wire along the stone walls still separate another pasture from the mostly Baldwin trees. The deer seem to like them.

And cows can hear and apple fall from a tree from about a half mile away.
