As the weather continues to get colder, I went to start tractor last night to drop a round bale & it did not want to start up. It would crank over three times & then stop. I would push the starter again & it would do the same, until about on the 10th try, it finally cranked over. I have never had to plug in the tractor in past winters & it would start up fine. Once tractor was warmed up I re-started it & it started right away. All the wiring connections are clean & I recently went from Champion plugs (18's) to Auto-Lite (21's). Can you help me out on what to do now or where to look to fix problem?

do you throw the idle wide open before you crank it and bring it back after the 2nd crank? works every time even with a low battery or bad starter.

plugging it in saves a lot of wear and tear....

The Tractor Vet, and John T may have it, I'll add that if it was hard to turn on one cylinder, and took tries to get it past that cylinder, I would suspect water might have gotten in the cylinder. Windy wet wether can push a flip cap up and allow water into the exhaust. Even a half chamber full can increase the compression to the point of not getting past it. A leaky head gasket will also fill a cylinder such that it will hydro lock. Just Ideas to ponder, JimN

Can't be that. Tractor has been stored inside barn for the past 7 years. Thanks for comment.

If and OLD M is tuned correctly they will start with a 3/4 dead 6 volt battery SOOOooo there for ya ain't got something wright or by chance it could have been flooded because of a leaking needel and seat . As stated OLD M's will start if ya can get the engine to turn a half turn . Case in point we or i should say that my buddy had and old M gas that had a mounded New Idea picker mounted on her that we sorta hopped up the engine with high alt. pistons and shaved the head with a 450 cam and on a warm day with a new Group 5 6 volt it started like it was 40 below well if the fan blade would make a half turn on anyday of the years that old M would start . So rules of tune up , propper points setting , propper plugs and gaps , propper timming and correct carb set , good battery and charging system good cables and connections Good clean gas and fuel system and your off and running . My old S/H will start down to -35 below but not at 40 below and when it is that cold i ain't screwen with it it can wait till it warms up.

Granger, yours is a wide open question and sounds mostly starter performance related, but may involve some ignition or other problems, but I will just address slow or weak cranking.....

The FIRST thing I would suspect is the battery, insure theres electrolyte above all the plates and that no cells exhibit a gray or milky color indicative of a weak cell and next give it a good slow full charge and better yet have a shop LOAD TEST it or try a know good substitute battery n see what happens????? ????? Next, if none of that helps much I would remove, clean n wire brush shiny, n reattach each n every battery n starter n starter switch n ground cable conenction n see if that helps. If the ground cable is attached to any thin or rusty sheet metal, maybe try it to a clean solid bolt somewhere????? ???

If still shes a slow cranker with a good battery n all good cables n connections, I would try to by pass the starter switch by using jumper cables to jump around/across it or just jump the hot ungrounded battery post direct to the starter n see if she cranks better then????? If by pass jumping around the starter switch improves cranking, I would suspect the switch.

Turn the lights on when cranking and if they dim wayyyyy yy down badly and/or the voltage drops drastically, I suspect the starter motor itself, but if theres not much change in voltage or light brightness, then I suspect the starter switch more.

FINALLY if the battery,,,,, ,,all cables n connections n grounds,,,,, ,,the starter switch are alllll llll okay but she cranks weak n slow, then I suspect the starter is at fault, maybe it just needs new brushes or the armature is dragging or otehr problems.

Sounds like it may simply be a cable or bad connection problem, so try that and check the battery condition first.

Let us know, best wishes n God Bless

John T
