Its just that the 4 wire VR system can provide a tad better regulation and operation plus the load current doesnt have to pass through the VR's Cutout Relay as it does if fed from the ammeter or the VR's BAT terminal (same point electrically). If the tractor was originally equipped with a 4 wire VR versus the old 2 wire cutout relay system, it would have had 2 wires down to the VR from the dash already anyway, one being from the ammeters load side terminal to BAT on the VR and the other from the light switch to the VR's L terminal. If it was the 2 wire cutout relay system with only one wire from the ammeter (or only a 3 wire VR with NO L terminal) down to the genny and relay area, then you would need to run the extra wire from the light switch to the L terminal..... ..

If it were mine and for no more work n expense thats required (almost nuttin) I would rewire the lights to be fed from the VR's L terminal since you have a 4 wire VR

Its your tractor and your choice and it still works either way, but I believe a bit better (although you may never notice or realize much if any difference) if you utilize the L terminal.
