We recently bought a 1468 with Elwood mfwd. I was wondering if these tractors ever left the factory with this option, and if they did, is there any way to tell this from the serial number. I was also wondering if there is anything special about a serial number with an astric (*) in it? This tractor was a special order tractor and has a little chrome plaque on the side of the hood that says "Made Especially for...."

Yes, the Elwood axle was optional from the 706 and bigger tractors up until the later 86 series tractors, when they switched to a Coleman front end. No, nothing in the serial number would indicate wheather or not it was factory installed. I have no idea what that asterisk means, but it's on just about every serial number tag from the 56 series on up.
