Did any of the M or SM blocks have the oil dip stick on the right hand side of the block or was that only with the 400 and 450 blocks?
I am looking at an M and it has the oil dip stick. The right hand side of the block at the back of the engine does not have 248, 264 or 281 printed to make it an easy identification of the block. Thank you for your help. Jim

Farmall gasoline M SM SMTA and early 400 tractors didn't have dipstick from factory. Dipstick could be installed on those blocks. Some power unit, replacement and other blocks were equiped with dipsticks from factory. If not ground off your block should have a casting # above oil filter. If its a 4 digit # followed by 2 letters its probably a M block. If date code on block matches rest of tractor dipstick was probably added. If theres a plate on side of block with 2 bolts holding it near carburator it may be replacement or power unit block.

Do you recall the numbers 6722 on the right side of the block. If it has that it's a C-248 M block. I have an M with a remanufactured block and that has the plug for the dipstick
