I have been working on my 50 M.Iput a 12 volt system on it and coated the fuel tank.Ready to take it for a drive and it won't start. To make a long story short it has a new switchand a new starter(i broke the lug off tightening cable),cables are good battery is good I even tried my truck battery. It sounds like the engine is to tight and the starter isn't turning fast enough. It acts like a dead battery I know ,but what have i missed.

You changed it to 12 volts huh...Did ya change the coil, or put in a resister...Sometimes a 6 volt starter put to 12 volts along with continued cranking will cook the "Miccah" out of the armature and the starter will die a slow death. Do you have a really good ground? How old is the gas in the tank?...today's gas turns to crap very quickly without stable in the tank...Have you got good fuel flow????, really, did ya check it to be certain...Do ya have a nice blue spark at the coil??? did ya check it? Did ya have the distributor out of tractor whilst ya was playing with her??? if so, is it in time??? Did ya check the rotor button location with timing mark at the index pointer? You could have it a half a turn off. There are many reason an M won't start...We need more info on what you did to your little Girl before we can properly diagnose it. Help us to help you...Drew

If everything is "good" then it should start. Obviously everything is not good, because the tractor does not start.

A 12V battery should roll that engine over like crazy on a stock M starter. Even a lowly truck battery.

You've got a bad connection somewhere. Take them all apart, shine them up, and reconnect. If that doesn't help, try bypassing one cable at a time with your jumper cables.

Ignoring all the other comments and listening to what you are saying, I'd sure check the ground cable. Paint and rust are very good insulators. Take the cable off and scape to bare metal. The other possability is that the replacement starter could be bad. It might run fine on the bench but won't pull a load. Bad teeth on the starter drive or ring gear can cause slow starter too.

Your starter is probably pulling too much current
from the battery and there's very little voltage
for your ignition. When your tractor was towed and it started, that eliminated the starter.

You may want to have the starter load tested
at your local auto shop that rebuilds starters, generators and alternators. Your battery cables should be copper wire and all connections clean as a pin. Hal

Ok then, I think I might have it...The new starter is TOO tight in the ring gear. It's either that or the ground ain't no good, or the other cable ain't no good, or the cranking amps in the new 12 volt ain't high enough...cause your pickup truck battery isn't high enough in the CCA department. Does the starter crank wildly when you have it pulled out of the tractor but still hooked up to your wires?? It should have some awesome speed and torque...If not, back to cables and or not high enough Cold Cranking Amps. If it does spin wildly with plenty of torque, then the problem is the starter is too tight in the ring gear. The only way that could happen is the wrong starter. Drew

I would pull the plugs and see if the engine will spin over with the starter. Squirt some engine oil into each cylinder too. Have you been having to add coolant to the radiator? Hal

Your short story is too short. Did the tractor run before? How long before? For the present I can tell you a good 12 v battery should spin it pretty good. Something is wrong.

From what you described you definitely have something wrong inside the engine. My question to you is, did you rebuild the motor, or has it been sitting for a while and started to rust. Before you fiddle with the motor take out the starter and test it. If it isn't the starter you might have to take the engine apart.
