I have a '39 h with the small PTO. I want to upgrade to the large PTO that came on the later models. I would like to know if this can be done by taking the floor board off and going in from the top or does the tractor need to be split in half?

The PTOs on early tractors from day one until early 1941 were "slot" or "dog" driven while later ones were spline driven. To put later PTO in the early tractors transmission counter shaft has to be changed. There were actually 3 differentn PTOs used the flat type "dog" drive from 1939 to early 1941, the flat type spline drive from early 1941 to late 1942 and the late type that the housing extends 6-8 inches or so behind transmission case from late 1942 0n.

If all you want is 1 3/8 6-splined modern PTO shaft, you can buy a splined adaptor sleeve that slides over your smaller shaft. You won't even get your hands dirty.

there are a couple of ways to go about this. The H had the early style pto just like what you have now with the larger shaft. That would be the easiest way then you could just park your tractor with the nose down on an incline and remove the bolts around the pto cover and just pull it straight back and install the new one. The other option is the newer style pto. To intall this you need to change the lower shaft that runs through the lower set of gears. You can do this by removeing the lift all pump and pulling this shaft out the front with out spliting the tractor I believe. You will most likely need to pull the top cover to get everything lined back up. you are looking at a big job if you want to change that shaft. The reson being is the drive on the end of that shaft is different early to late. I went through the same thing on my M but I wanted the original pto and not the late style. Good Luck
