My dad and i bought a square baler 6 years ago off a fellow who used to work in this area and he is a regular poster on this website. He had 3 oliver tractors that had a 5.9 cummins conversion.. dad and i love a challenge and thought we would like to do it... but im not a fan of an oliver so we kinda let the idea go... but it has been rehashed and we are thinking of doing it to a farmall... a 756 856 1256, 886 986 something like that. HAs it been done? im sure it has but has anyione seen it done? I know on the olivers with their peticular trannys pretty much an motor would work you just had to get a colar to get from the motor to the tranny.. Am i thinking ahead of my IQ or does anyone think it can be done? any help ideas thoughts let me know.. thanks brad

Yes, I have seen several bigger IH's repowered with 5.9 Cummins. It's not worth doing unless you've got a gas engine, as the IH diesels are just as good if not better than the 5.9. I know of a couple 1755 Olivers that have been repowered with the 5.9, and that makes a real sweet tractor. The Oliver transmissions are actually quite strong, and you get a three-speed powershift (over-under). Main problem with those tractors was the 310 engine. I had a chance to run a 1755 with a 5.9 one day, I was impressed.

There is an equipment dealer in Wisconsin that does that exact thing regularly to mainly IH tractors. If I remember right, they also sell adapter kits to do the swap yourself. By my foggy memory, I think it is Link Equipment in Ridgeland, Wis.

I've seen at least one M with a cummins conversion, but I don't think it was a 5.9. I've also seen Ms with Detroit diesel conversions, and of course we all have seen the Ms with the small block Chevy conversion. I have also seen an older IH pick-up truck with a diesel from a 1206 transplanted into it, and it turned out very nice and was/is a very dependable and useable truck. In short, if you want to do it bad enough, it can be done.
