Besides removing the front end and pulling the front pully of the front of the crank what does it take to replace the front seal on a Farmall A? Can I just drill a couple of holes in the seal, screw a couple of screws in it and pull it out like a seal on a lawn mower?

Mornin Wayno, All good advice from the others but I did something a little different. Instead of a .002 pressfit on that front pulley. When I got it off, I used a flap wheel in the lathe to open up the bore to make the reinstall just a light tap fit and I used two setscrews on top of the woodruff key to keep the pulley from moving. The nice thing about doing this is you can slightly reposition the pulley so the seal is not riding on the worn diameter and will not leak. Some people use the speedy sleeve but this way you dont have to . Just a suggestion, it worked fine for me, but I have the tools at work to do this since I am a toolmaker by trade.

If not mistaken, you will have to remove the governor as well as the front cover. The seal has to pressed in from the inside surface. For sure look into putting in a speedy sleeve and a slightly oversize seal. It should come as a set.

Your described way will also work if you do not bend the cover. Take care and do not pry on it. pull evenly around and don't get it crosswize in the bore. Look at your front puley shaft and be sure there is no groove in the location of the seal. If there is it needs to have a different seal (with the same bore and shaft sizes used to change the wear point, or a speedy sleeve to make it new. A good bearing house like Motion industries will fix you up if you bring in the old seal. JimN

Once you have the front end and the pulley off you remove the pressed steel cover that holds the seal and push out the old seal and put in the new one put the pulley back on before you tighten the bolts on the pressed steel front cover. That way the seal will be centered on the pulley and last longer.
