On my 1943 Farmall M I have the exhaust manifold for either kerosene or distillate. I was wondering how to tell which fuel it runs on because now we have it running on straight gas. I can"t tell because I have no serial number or any information from the previous owner as to what it ran on. Thank you.

My tractor has the setup on it for running on kerosene. The thing is, is that it has the extra tank, but it wasn't plumbed in when I got the tractor. Also, it doesn't have shutters. So is it possible that someone switched it to kerosene or vice versa. Thanks for the information.

In years past (many years past!) kero was 1/4 to 1/3 (as I recall) the price of gas; don't recall whether distillate was a step less or more refined than kero, but people tended to use the tems interchangeably. It wasn't that unusual to see folks without much money, and the older lower compression cars, rig a little tank to start up on gas, and when warm swith to kero; ran fairly well, too, tho a bit smelly at times. Now kero is a "specialty" (read: expensive) item.

the kero-distillate engine had a different head, our 42 m was a distillate, we swapped out the head and put the higher compression pistons in it. if i remember right , the kero-distillate would get past the rings and wind up in the oil pan. the oil will be filled to the lower check plug. when the level would come up to the higher one, it was time for an oil change. you also need the shudder on the front of the radiator. you had to fiddle with the shudder control to keep the motor at the right temperature, too cold, fuel didnt burn good, too hot, it would lean out and loose power. id keep er on gas.

Ye just for fun it is different to run on Kero. less explosion noise so the engine is quieter. not to much diff in the power. A long time ago someone who works in the fuel industry did a post on how to "make " your own distillate. Take really crap gas let it stew in the bottom of a gas tank and then add some stinky stuff to it. It was pretty bad sounding stuff. Come to think of it it was almost some kind of a brew of 2 cycle mix soundin. Actually from what I have read it was a very poor grade of gas that was for the agg market and was really dirt cheap! The tractor must be pretty hot to burn this stuff. Hope someone saved it and can repost it. I would like to save it if they do. Thanks! Jeffcat

Run it on gas. Kerosene is more expensive, harder to find in any quantity, and the distillate referred to doesn't exist anymore. The kero/distillate manifolds are the same, the gas one is different. The heads (and possibly the pistons) for gas, kerosene and distillate are different, you will have to get a parts book and compare it with the cast in number under the valve cover. Kerosene/distillate heads produced lower compression than did the gas head. Other than novelty, running on kerosene has no advantage.

The reciepie for Vaporising oil or Tractor Kero is 4 imperial gallons of Kero, 1 imperial gallon of petrol and 1 imperial quart of Diesel. Try some if you like my H runs nicer on it but down here in N.Z. Kero is dearer than petrol so I dont bother, when I lived in England it was very worth while as it was 1/4 of the cost than running staght petrol!
