I need to get a starter for a 1946 Farmall A. There is no starter there now, so I do not know what the original part number is that I need to cross over to.
Thanks.

My A parts manual shows only one starter Part No. 55783 D and it has button on rear of starter. Any non super non diesel letter series starter will bolt up and work on A but electrical hook up may be different. Have been running early Super M starter om my 1941 A for years I hve solenoid switch and not button on starter though.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know which style of starter should be in there. Was the starter used specific to years?

I just bought a starter for my240 utility yesterday...was rebuilt cost me $90..The one for mine was out of an H with 2 bolt pattern 10 tooth, and a stud bolt for my cable..I looked in a catalog and it looks like the a,b,super a,c 100,140,200,240 might be the same...don't know why the H starter fits mine, but it works great! Seems like I don't miss my tractor, until I need the darn thing...

My catalog lists 2 differant ones. 1109611 or 1107021. The 2nd one says something about contract at front. Now sure what that means unless its talking about the starter button

Don't know about the A, but if its like the H, the earlier ones had the push button switch, and later the put the switch on the starter and used a pull rod. ken
