Gentleman,
The black smoke coming out of the exhaust and messing up my spark plugs was as you say a bad float setting. Your recomendation between a Carter and Zenith, I took off the Carter and replaced it with a Zenith. Works great!

Working between the governor and throddle adjustment, I had to change my governor and lever inside. Still working on the fine adjustments, can't seem to get the right settings, need a smoother interaction between carb, governor, and thoddle linkage. Any tips would be much appreciated Thank you.
Bob

with engine off take pin out of clevis going to carb. Now open throttle all the way. Now with clevis holding carb wide open adjust clevis so pin goes in. Your input lever from throttle on the gov mite have lots of play and needs to be rebushed.

Gene, That's exactly what the problem was. I pulled the governor off and it needed a new level inside and also the bushing was badly worn. Tried to remove the bolt holding the lever, but it acts as though the last person in there lock tight the bolt on. The head started to round off, wanted to put the heat to it, but my tank of gas is so old it wouldn't stay going. Well found a half decent governor, and placed the new lever into that. Had to carefully grind on the new lever to make it fit. There is still some fine adjustments to be made in there, for now working around the yard it is great. When spring comes and all my buddies want to pull against one another that's a different story. It will be fine tuned way before spring. Thinking even of polishing the ports and the head, but would love to get some feed back from the folks here first. Thanks!
Bob

Jossette, Thanks! I did that, and also found the biggest problem was the springs on the throttle lever to the governor.

plumbob forgot about those springs. I put a heavy duty spring in there a long time ago, and just never thought about it..

Good to see you found the problem.
