When not moving, I have to lean forward, and use both arms to get the steering wheel to move about two to three inches. Is that normal? I know I have gotten ten years older this year, but I don't feel that weak. If I jack it up, everything moves freely. When the narrow front was under it a couple years ago it did not seem to be any better. Any ideas?

When were the spindles last greased? I have forgotten; is there a bearing or just a bushing at the bottom of the spindle that supports the weight of the tractor? How about the universal joints on the steering shaft? Is there grease/oil in the gear box in front of the radiator?
Any moving part will need lube some day so look at the whole system.

Well it could be that the thrust bearings are getting bad or she is binding a bit or your getting weaker . I know that it is the latter for me . The one time that i was in a bind for and extra tractor to drill beans with the only thing i had setting around was my S/MTA with out powerful steering and i thought that well ya ran M's in the fields before and the only thing that will happen to the MTA is that it is going to get dirty and soap and water will fix that even tough it was all apinted up with a super nice shinny paint job SOOOooo i put here to work drillen in around 50 acres of beans and i was in a real big hurry as the dark storm clouds were moven in . Well that was the fastest bean drillen that i ever done running 4th gear wide open just backen off for the turns and cranken on the wheel and staben the brake to spin her got the last couple acres done in a light rain i was happy that i was done ,TILL THE NEXT DAY from the waist up i hurt sooooo o bad. Note to self next time use the 706 .

Now you know why Grandpa could beat you arm wrestling when he was 75 years old. A lifetime of Armstrong power steering will do that for you.

You've got two choices, well, three actually:

1. Start working out to build up your arm muscles.
2. Install power steering ($600-$1000).
3. Get an H/300/350 size tractor. They steer easy even standing still.

Add a fourth:
Start moving before you start turning. It takes only a couple inches.
Don't paint yourself in a corner.

Yep,

Thack is right. We've gotten so darned used to this power steering anymore that anything less seems "wrong".

Used to be all cars, pickups and tractors drove the same darned way. Armstrong. :>)

If you do not have power steering that would be normal.

Have you checked the grease in the steering gear under the front grill? Also check the bolster shaft bushings for wear when you have the cover off to check the grease. With age & wear the bolster shaft will move to the side & put a bind on the worm & lower gear. Also asume the front end has been greased as needed. Also lower bolster shaft bushing has a zerk & lower thrust brg. Will not be like power steering but will help it turn easier. Unless you reseal the gear box it will not hold 80-90 gear oil just used gun grease. The bolster shaft will also be worn. csn be built up & turned down.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have looked at all that you have suggested. I will need to add P.S. or keep the tractor moving.
