What steps to take for increased Power on my H

Well folks, trying to get my shop done between helping neighbor with harvest and working on my H when I get a chance.
I have rebuilt the carb, new points condenser & plugs, new plug wires (from Brillman).
I still don't have the power like my neigbors old H's that we use often. It seems to rev up fine, but under a load it struggles to pull the manure spreader.
Do I need to start getting into the guts of the engine? I thought I should go out and buy a compression gauge and start there, but I have no idea how to use one correctly.
Any other things I need to check?

When I got home last nite I pulled the plugs and all but #4 were nice and clean. #4 seemed to have some oil on it.
Could it be just running on 3 cylinders?

I also replaced the governor spring when I first got it.

Hi, With all the salvage yards now it is easy to get power from any H. Be sure you have a high compression head, cold manifold, cam shaft from a 1950 or newer, battery ignition with 30 degree advance, rebuilt carb. govenor in good shape, and fire crater pistons. You should then have 36 Hp. Good Luck, Chuck

Allan, I never thought about that.
Jim, that is great step by step info!! I will print that out and look for a compression tester.
Are certain brands better than others? Should I go to NAPA or other parts places to get one?

The tester should be one you can depend on. I like the screw in type so I know it is sealed into the hole. NAPA tools are good if they are from the professional group. All stores have those boxes of lead wrenches an shedding wire brushes. Snap-On and MAC are serious tools. I buy them for life. Sears professional Craftsman tools are also worthy. JimN

Randy,

I'll just bet you that your neighbor has the newer style step up pistons in his H.

The difference is like night and day. Step ups give you an automatic 50% increase in power; just about up to that of a M.

No Comparison between the two.

Allan I have two H's and one just jumps compared to the other which is no slouch, I think that the governors have been tweaked a little, it seems to rev higher and faster than the other tractor, while I believe the other tractor runs perfectly fine..governor springs tightened up ...dunno but its tweaked...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Compression Testing:
All plugs out
battery charged fully
good compression tester
Neutral
Ign off
Helper
With the gauge in #1 sparkplug hole, Crank the engine through 7 compression cycles on that cylinder. Read gauge and write down #
repeat for all cylinders.
If distillate engine expect about 95 to 110 psi
If gasoline "X1" suffex expect 125 to 130
if rebuilt and dome pistons or High altitude, expect more.
If Low
Squirt three oilcan squrts of engine oil into each cylinder. Spin engine with starter to distribute the oil.
Recheck compression as above.
If way higher the rings may need to be replaced.
if the same, and uniform, it may be the compression it has.
If more than 10 to 15 PSI different, it probably needs a valve grind and guide service.

Check the ignition timing before any teardown, ignition timing is a very important item, and can include the advance mechanism in the distributor as well as the static timing.
