IH 300U Thermostat

I found a local honest wizard that performed his magic and repaired my radiator for $45.

I went through a lot of stuff trying to not pay the $30 that my local IH dealer wanted for a new thermostat. I finally found a direct replacement for $17 at a local auto parts store. Stant#13436

The factory replacement thermostat has a housing around the spring which only fits in the water jacket housing upside down from normal. Usually a thermostat fits with the smooth side up and the spring side down. This one has a space built into the top housing for the thermostat housing to fit into that looks upside down to most, but only fits this one way.

I found this interesting so I thought I would pass it on. I hope I installed it correctly as it is the only way it would fit.

The thermostat that I took out did not have the housing on it like the one in the parts book and like the one that I put in.

Any way, it looks like it is in there upside down to me but it is the only way it would fit.

Hope this made sense.

Dell

Almost all new t stats have "this side toward radiator printed/stamped onto the rim of the flange. If yours is in backwards, it may not matter because (I think there is a bypass passage in the housing allowing coolant to get to both sides of the T stat. THus it will respond to the temp of the coolant in the engine. If this is not true it will overheat consistently. Good luck, I hope I helped. JimN

The IH300/350U has a unique tstat that is made just for that particular housing and it only fits one way. Its all buttoned up now so when I get some coolant for it(after the next two days of crud wx)then I will see, but I think its ok.

Youre right, there is a secondary passage in the housing. Thanks. Dell.
