Have had 3 F-series tractors apart and have found all sorts of guck at the bottom of the radiator and as much as a couple inches of guck at the base of the sleeves within the block. Both of these will impeed heat transfer to the coolant. You might need a good flushing.

As others have said, definately use anti-freeze. Dad's C had the thmp pickup unit at the return pipe to the engine,(bottom of radiator). Would never come off cold unless the tractor was low on water and it didn,t circulate, andby then you were in trouble. They do get quite hot at the top of radiator, that is what makes the system work, hot water rises and cold descends. My Cuib will get up to almost 200 going down the road without a load, but you can hold your hand on the return pipe back to the engine. If it isn't cooling, could be the radiator is pluged so enough air doesn't go through it, or uner some conditions a bad or misssing fan shroud can cause them to overheat.

so where is the sender located that could make quite a difference in the temp that the guage reads. Who in their rite mind would say that you cant run antifreeze better not get any stock tips from them. Just how do they think you can keep it from freezing when temp says 17deg

Did you premix the antifreeze before you put it? How long has it been in there?

Running that warm is not a problem if it is working hard. If it is boiling the coolant it is a problem. To be sure of what you have, use a known good thermometer in the coolant (through the rad cap, into the coolant) as it warms up.
It is necessary to run antifreeze in the coolant. Replaced every two years. The rust inhibitorsa and other ingredients are needed. The presence of flakes of rust and sludge in the bottom of the block can contribute to the higher temp. Flushing the system with a brand name flushing agent, and back flushing the block through the drain plug will help. Follow the recommendations on the container. If the gauge is not indicating correctly, new reproduction gauges are available. If the gauge is in the middle of the run area, I believe it should be at about 180 degrees F. Hoses can have breaks on the interior of the hose causing restriction.

Generally the thermosiphon systems are remarkably trouble free when kept clean. Good luck, let us know what happens, Jimn
