i will give all the info i can in hoping that someone can help me here. have a '39 h that has just been rebuilt. also new plugs, rotor, cap, ect. ran great. no trouble starting at all. have not used for a couple of weeks and now has no spark to plugs. pulled one out and held it in my hand, no spark. has an h4 mag. rotor does turn. everything looks good and clean. have no idea where the "points" are to even check them, and they are not even mentioned in my i&t manual. have been on the archives and have read alot about timing and have the first notch lined up, and if i am reading things correctly the rotor is pointig at the #4 wire? don't know if i am reading this right, also it does not move by hand so not sure how to fix this if it is wrong.also if i am understandig this correctly, if the rotor is working right, i can take the the secondary cable and hold that up to the distributor and i should get a spark? i have not tried this since i did not want to move the timing marks in case that was the problem. i did take the mag cover off and did see some moisture in there, but thought it is more like wd-40, but could be wrong. i hope i am covering all the bases here, and those are everything that i tried, any and all help will be much appreciated.

I had the same problem after I replaced the points on my "A". Figured I goofed on two things. 1. Put to much grease on the shaft which splashed onto the points. 2. I pushed the little block that the point spring connects to all the way home instead of letting the outer cap push it in while tightening it. The block needs to be clean and make good contact with the out cap which is held on by three screws. Worked for me??

Please dont spray wd40 inside there. A little wire dryer maybe but best to wipe off and install a new gasket. Any oil or spray in the housing can loosen up crap old grease and all kinds of junk and will get on the internal rotor magnet and stuff. So No. Test like bob said or send the unit to mag man. I would try a couple quick checks before getting inside the mag. Since you say its a mag ignition, you should have a ground out switch that is connected by a wire to the side of the magneto by a small nut. Take this nut off and remove the wire from the mag. Now you know for sure that the mag isnt grounded by a bad wire or faulty switch. Now pull the primamry wire off from the center of the distributor cap (the one coming from the magneto cap) and hold it about 1/4 inch from the side of the grounded engine block. Try turning the tractor over now (you may need a helper to hit the starter button). If you have spark you know that the magneto is ok inside and the issue is either with the kill switch circuit or somewhere from the dist cap to the plugs...

If you dont have a spark, you will have to open up the mag to check some things. Bewteen the link Bob gave you, and help from people on here, we can walk you thru it. MagMan rebuilds H4 mags if you need to go that route as well...

I agree. If it was running and you havn't had the mag off it is still in time. Yes, wipe the cap out dry. The wire that hooks to the side of the mag grounds to the switch for stopping the tractor. You might tyr unhooking the wire. The points are kina hidden inside and you can get the mag out of time if you take the cover off. No biggy though and if you ask the right questions we can walk you through it. You can't mess up anything the rest of us havn't fixed before.

The mag has an "impulse coupling", and at slow cranking speed, the rotor will stop just before each posirion corresponding to a high-ternsion terminal in the cap, and then quickly pass the terminal as the impulse "snaps" and spark occurs, stopping again just before the next terminal.

Get the mag to spark first, then worry about any timing issues.

Here is a link to the "Blue Ribbon Service Manual for the mag...you'll have to "cutand paste":

P. S....

The first thing I would do is to clean the points by drawing a clean piece of white cardstock through the closed points several times, followed by spraying any remaining debris off of the contact faces, using electrical contact cleaner, and allowing it to air-dry.

If you follow the directions in the manual I linked, and take out 3 screws holding the complete rotor drive to the mag, and remove it as a unit, nothing can get out of time, as the mag shaft is "D"-shaped, and the complete rotor drive will only go back on the mag one way.

DO NOT remove the little cover right next to the rotor, which is held on with 2 screws, or you will wind up with the rotor shaft/gear out, and out of time. Not TOO serious, though, as there are timing marks on the gear teeth, as shown in the manual.
