I recently acquired a 1946 Farmall A from my brother in-law. He mowed about three acres every week with it. Two Summers ago he got a new mower. That winter he didn"t drain the radiator. I think the freeze plug cracked or heaved. Anyway, the old tractor runs good, has good oil pressure, and smokes minimally on cold start up.
I plan on driving the tractor in parades pulling a wagon. I plan on new sheetmetal and tires. How much work is an engine overhaul ? Is DuPont Centuari good paint, and what number. Thanks, this is a great source of information. TJS

Gauger,
You've just set a new standard for my own restoration of a 1940 A. Yours is truely amazing. Great work. Where did you get your charcoal covered seat? The only one's I've been able to find are the silver canvas or the red and white vinyl.

Brad

Gauger, that restoration looks flawless ! Must have taken hundreds of man hours. I don"t have the expertice to complete that extensive of an overhaul. Thanks for sharing, I put your picture album in my favorites. TJSS

marty, another way is to compare # against tractor registry on research(look up model and use # to find yr.) possibly Bit more inaccurate though!

Before you get all excited about new paint tires and so forth better check compression and leaks because there has to be some seals leaking somewhere. How is the wiring and brakes and the steering and the clutch and the front wheel bearings these all are things to be checked before paint and new sheet metal or do you want new shinny paint with oil leaks starts when it feels like. Better get an I@T manual get all the mech work done before worring about cosmetics. Have seen those things happen more that once. Just a line to help down the road.

IH 50/Dupont 7410/PPG 70019. Centari is DuPont's high end acrylic enamel.

It's as much work as you want to make it. The engine is just a small fraction of the time I spend on a restoration. Once the tractor is split and cleaned the rebuild is pretty simple. The crank pulley may come off hard and the wet sleeves can be a bugger to pull but beyond that it's not bad. But I consider an engine rebuild to include all of the sub systems too, ie. carb, starter, water pump, governor, generator, air cleaner, etc. and restore them all. There are also much more time consuming aspects of it like the paint removal and body work, painting all of the piece parts etc. Again, do your own thing. Some guys are happy with fresh paint and new decals and little else. Nothing wrong with that either. Take a look at the '48 Super A I did a few years ago. Just cut and paste the address, I still haven't figured out how to post a picture. I'm better with tractors than computers. Link

I have a mid 40's A that I have'nt been able to narrow down the yr! How did you figure out it was a 46? and when I do restore this one I am planning on keeping the sheet metal original, and believe you should do the same, if it is worth keeping!!!!! !

The serial number should be on a tag on the left seat bracket and on a flat section just above the dist or mag, may have to scrape some crud to see it.

Now go to the left hand side of this page and find serial numbers in the research & info section.
