I've got a 49 model cub. It runs great when you put new plugs in it, but after a hour or so you begin to hear a miss in the engine and feel a pretty good power loss. Eventually the tractor won't start and you'll need new plugs again. It has new wires, points and condenser in it. What do you guys think? Coil, rings, valves?

Couple of possibilities. Black, sooty - fuel.

Fuel/carburation. Float set to high, dirty carburator.

Air cleaner (entire air cleaner) needs to be cleaned.

If the tractor runs for an hour before it starts missing it's probably not an ignition issue. Although it could be the coil breaking down. That usually happens when the coil warms up.

Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground, then have someone crank
the engine. Should have a hot blue spark. Be sure the ignition switch is in the run position. Hal

your resistor in your coil or if you have an external resistor maybe bad and is makeing the coil too hot. try a new coil with an internal resister.

Im not sure of the internal or external resistor, but I do know its a got a 12v negative ground with a resistor inline before the coil.

What do the plugs look like when you pull them out?

The plugs are black and sutted up, however I've seen much worse on other equipment that still ran good.

Ok, very black and sooted up in 1hr, but runs good for that first hour.

Sounds like low spark issue, and this would lead me to think it's the coil.

Try that first.
