I finally got this auction scow home. It cut half of my field before the hydraulic pump got really hot. I went over the manual to find the fill location. Anyway, it appears that the original fill cap has been replaced with a 1/2 inch plumbers plug. There is no way to check the level. What is the right level?

Not knowing much about tractors, I was running the bush hog with the isolating valve open. The bushhog stayed down for the first 20 minutes. After that, the unit raised itself on its own. I could not keep the unit down without using the isolation valve. The problem is that the hydraulics seemed to overheat when I did this. How can I keep the 3PTH down without closing the valve (or am I supposed to). The hydraulics seem to complain and overheat with this valve off. In the other extreme, I cannot keep the bushhog down. It will elevate after I give the tractor some throttle.
The manual doesn't help. What the heck am I doing wrong here?

Hi Flying, the creeping up of the 3pt hitch is usually caused by the Draft Control Level (Small control lever on the fender side of the 3pt hitch control lever) not being pushed all the way forward. The draft control lever should be only user for in ground 3pt equipment like a plow.

The correct hydraulic oil level is like someone else mentioned about 4" from bottom of filler plug.

How do you know the hydraulic system is overheating? Do the "better" tractors have a hydraulic oil temp sensor or what?

I did the spit test on the pump. The tank reservior was quite warm to touch and I was smoking. Both of my levers are all the way forward.
My unit is the British one. I"ll try this again tonight with the valve open. Hopefully the same will not happen again.

Does your tractor have remote hydraulic hookups ? If not do not close the isolation valve. Is your other lift lever pushed all the way forward ? darn I forget the name of it right now, it is beside the lift lever...darn brain glitch need to go to bed. The lift raising on it's own would to me indicate a problem in the lift box mechanism. On the level If you check in the top of the lift box fill plug I think it is supposed to be 4 inches down from the top of the opening.
Mine has an auxilliary pump on the front and the level check is totally different.
But I don't think fluid level is your problem.

To start with where are you located? IH sold the British built version of the 444 in Canada. In the US the chassis and engine was shipped to Louisville from Britain, from there it received a US built front axle, electrical, radiator, fenders and hydraulic system complete with 3 point hitch. This one can be confusing especially if you buy the wrong manual.
