Charging battery on a postive ground system ??

I have a 1942 Farmall BN with a 6 volt positive ground system. I charged the battery once but I unhooked the battery cables because I was unsure of the postive ground issue. The tractor has been repainted and it is not easy to take the cover off of the battery box and I do not want scratch it up taking the cover on and off. To avoid this can I hook the positive lead from the charger to ground on the tractor and the negative lead from the charger directly to the starter. Seems like it should work. Will this work?

As long as your tractor is wired as original, what you described will work fine. John T is thinking of other models that don't have the switch mounted directly on the starter.

What John T is trying to say, as long as you are on the hot side of the starter switch it will charge just fine.

NOPE, it wont work as you described it. In order to charge the battery without actually getting to its posts, you would have to hook the chargers Positive to frame ground as you say buttttt ttttt ttt you would have to hook the Negative to the battery (NOT starter motor) side of the starter switch or solenoid to be connected up with the battery. The starter post itself or the starter side of a starter switch or solenoid is ONLY connected up to the battery when starting i.e. the switch or solenoid is closed.

Connecting to frame ground and the starter motor post (or starter side of switch/solenoid) will try n turn the starter and be an extreme low impedance load on the charger.

Hook to frame ground and the battery side of a starter switch or solenoid if you wanna charge the battery.
