A friend has a B with a completely rebuilt engine
that runs great except....when it is started cold it spits droplets of black sooty water that appear to be water with carbon disolved in them. The engine does run a little rich, the carb is not original to the engine (Zenith from an Allis C)and smokes black when revved.. There is no loss of coolant. Anybody ever see this before? Could it be condensation mixing with carbon depostits?? It stops once the engine starts to warm up.

Gauger: Looked at your headline again, started thinking at tractor with black water, not near as bad as having a horse with black water.

Now, don't ask me much technical about black water in horses. All I can tell you is my dad had a horse down out in the field. Not out to pasture but working and fell ill. The vet diagnosed it as black water, and the horse died two days later. I was probably 8 at the time. The last horse left our place when I was 10, thus I never did learn much about them. Really never had the urge to know much more about horses.

Gauger: As others have said quite normal. I can remember the old Farmall 300 on a damp morning. It you started it from seat with wind in your face, you could look like the great speckled bird. Get the right combination of temp change over night, coupled with heavy dew, these old gassers can pepper you.

Oh I forgot, you and Allan probably don't know what a heavy dew is, baling hay at 4 am so it doesn't get too dry.

Perfectly normal. My cub and my 130 have done it for years, and both are working tractors which run well.

As the others indicate, it is just pesky. I recommend sdjusting the carb to reduce the rich mixture at High Rs. That will help reduce the spots. JimN

Your car or truck probably does this when it's cold, but disappears when the engine gets to normal operating temp. Hal

Absolutely correct. Professor in my engines class says that under ideal conditions, a gallon of gasoline when burned in an engine produces--among other combustion products--a gallon of water.
