I don't understand. I have two sets of batterys for my camera. I can charge them at the same time and the ones lying on the desk go dead quicker than the ones in use? Yes, I take them out of the charger. Does this make sense?

Nothing about rechargable batterys makes much sense. Even knowing the chemistry helps little in assessing issues with self discharge. If they are standard size rechargables, AAA or AA- or C bats, I would try new ones. If they are rechargable proprietary batteries that fit only a few cameras and are pricy, I would try discharging them by leaving the camera on till dead, then fully charging them. This often reestablishes the batteries full range of power (sometimes not) Good luck, JimN

"Exercising" your nickel based batteries by completely discharging and then charging once or twice works really well. For Lithium-ion batteries, the only excercise that works is when you take them outside and throw them across the yard or into the garbage. When they get weak, pitch them out.

Hello,

Also works great for cell phones. I get to listen to everybody complain about the price of new batteries and them never holding charges. They keep them on the car charger and never fully charge or discharge them. I drain mine completely 2-3 times a week religiously. I also never partially charge them I always give them a full charge everytime. My cell phone battery is almost four years old and still works like new.

NI-MH whatever that means. I'm exercising them in the charger right now.

Check your charger type. A typical NiMH (Nickel-metal-hydride) battery charger will also charge Nicad (Nickel-Cadmium) batteries, but the reverse is not true. A Nicad-only charger would overcharge the NiMH batteries.

You should be able to get 2 years usage on your NiHM batteries if you try to use your batteries almost to the point of complete discharge but not to the point of failure before putting them in your charger.

Nickle--Metal Hydride and Lythium Ion Batteries are rechargable batteries they may not respond to the cure mentioned above. JimN

they are AA batterys. I guess I'll just live with it. Don't seem to matter which ones I use. camera takes 2 batterys and I'm sure I don't put the same ones in all the time. I can use the camera for a couple weeks, then when the battery light comes on I think, "OK, I've got a spare set charged up" Wrong, they have gone dead lying on the shelf.

I had a similar problem with my NiMH batteries until I bought new ones. The new ones last weeks where the old ones would last days. They are higher capacity and maybe newer technology. The problem you are seeing might be that they are both self-discharging at the same rate, and your camera just does not pull much off of them.
