SM vs. SMD steering bolster

Hello,

Why did the SMD use a 1.5 inch longer hood and front bolster. Was it to use a larger radiator, longer engine or both. Can you bolt up a SMD front bolster to the frame rails of a SM and then use the SMD hood? Can I then use my new SM radiator with a SMD bolster?

I ask because I'm in the process of putting a 2-71 Detroit Diesel in my SM and the exhaust is on the right and I'd like to use a SMD hood. I need to rebuild the front bolster anyways so if I can get a SMD front bolster so be it.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

The bellhousing/ torque housing on the 400 is about 3 inches longer than on the super m. We measured it when we put the schwartz wide front on the 400 and it's wheelbase was the same as the super m's, which has the front axle pivot sticking out from under the front bolster because of damper pulley clearance issues.

May want to recheck center housing measurement difference. Thats not correct.

I may have been wrong that was 10 years ago. I know it was different.

Yes a MD SMD and after that, SMTA,400 or 450 gas or diesel will bolt to your frame rails and radiator and longer hood will work. Think longer engine is why MD and SMD used bolster that extended farther forward. Whan they got to SMTA up to 450 they made Diesel length standard for both it and gas. Later bolster used squared off corners with holes though. Start crank parts are different on some, but that won't matter with your engine change. Also bolsters I'm refering to are for regular farmall row crop tractors, not V series. If your going to use a standard steering worm shaft, get the diesel one with bolster.

I can't answer your questions and the parts book is confusing on bolsters.

I can offer a perfect MD hood that is 39 7/8" inches long. Coincedentally, it is the same length as a SMTA gas hood.

I should add that the motor swap you are contemplating has been done many times. Detroit Diesel or another outfit made kits to do this. I doubt if they required frame channels, bolsters, radiators, and hood changes.

Hello,

I'd rather just swap hoods than cut and fill the original SM hood. As I said the exhaust is on the right on the Detroit Diesel just like a SMD. I'm not replacing the radiator I just want to know If it will fit on a SMD bolster.

Thanks,

Mark
