I have a 43 H I have serviced the oil bath air cleaner regularly. I have never taken the top piece of the cleaner off is there something up there that needs attention. It is not the fruit jar type.

Randy...I would assume the air cleaner on an H is not all that different from a Super M, which I have, so I'll tell you what I did. (It was one of the first things I did after getting the tractor home.) I removed the entire cleaner from the tractor, separated the oil cup from it, and looked down the tube. The walls were lined with greasy dirt--not real thick but you could see and feel it. I scraped out what I could reach and washed out the rest with multiple baths of kerosene. It cleaned up very well, I think. You probably have the same stuff inside yours. David

I have a IH 240 Utility that has a steel wool? type of filter in the big tube above the oil bath. I cleaned them (two) with gas , let them dry, blow out with air, and repeated several times. I don't know about the H but can anyone tell me if these need to be oiled or left dry? Many thanks. David.

I certainly hope You put oil in the cup of the oil bath air cleaner. They are 80 year old technology and not really a very good air filter at all but without oil they're worthless. The vacuum of the running engine is supposed to draw oil up from the cup on the bottom into the steel mesh and capture the dirt.... without the oil the dust/dirt could flow straight through into the engine.

My 45 H with a jar precleaner had about a 1/4" of dirt buildup in the pipe going from the top to bottom. Don't remember how I cleaned it out though, that was 2 years ago. Old age you know. Dave
