I thought that I read somewhere that a creeper gear was a factory option on the H? I have thought of using my H with a rototiller. Anybody know?

The H and tiller won"t work too well in hard ground because it"s too fast. However if the field has been plowed/disced, it is managable with a tiller. I have seen this done.

I would add another tractor to your stable such as a 300 with the torque amplifier(gear reducer)... that"s what we did to run a tiller and transplanter at slower ground speeds..

I already have a 300U. I am hoping to find a cheap skidloader and take the loader off the 300. It was real nice mower tractor before the loader was on it.... Too darn nose heavy now.

They were offered for H, but unless you get lucky they are hard to find in good shape and may be high dollar if you do find. Its your tractor and I'm fine with whatever you do, so this is just my opinion. By the time you buy and install the gears that money would be better spent on tractor with live PTO and creeper gear to use tiller. Bill the attachment numbers are 58280 DA, 60215DA, 65270 DA, 65271 DA. Different ones are for two types of PTO drive on counter shaft and two different fourth gear speeds.

A Hydro-Creeper was sold for approximately $600 at the auction Run by Aumann in PA last Saturday. It was the first one the auctioneer ever saw. Maybe that's because he is from Southern Illinois.

The H & M's with the low gear option carried an (X1A,X1E) at the end of the serial number. There are several around. I have a running M and a parts M that have the low gears. I never hear of it increasing teh PTO speed though.

Yes, the H with low low gear was available as an option. The "Low Speed Gears" option consisted of a special countershaft with the low gear machined into it instead of pressed on, a single second gear which was pressed against it, and a reverse countershaft that would match.

I believe M&W made an aftermarket unit commonly called a "9 Speed". I think they were available for both the H and the M.

When engaged the M&W 9 speed makes ground speed in gears 1 thru 4 about 50%(?) FASTER. It also increases PTO RPM by the same amount amount. It would therefore provide no advantage whatsoever to tiller operation...

OTOH the Super H was offered with "low-low speed attachment". This consists essentially a different set of 1st speed gears that reduce 1st gear ground speed by about 50%. Don't know whether it could be installed on a regular H however.

Standard first gear reduction is 19/44=2.31

Low,low first gear reduction is (I believe) 14/49=3.50.

I need to qualify those numbers. These numbers are for a M. My H book is on loan.

Secondly, my parts book does not specify the number of teeth on the low-low countershaft with its integral first gear. I am assuming the total number of teeth on the main shaft and countershaft has to remain constant when added up as a gear set.

Consequently, after doing the math, a low-low set will have 66% of the speed of the regular set. That would be similar to a TA. In fact, you cannot buy , out of the parts book, a low-low set for a TA equipped tractor. However, SMTA and 400-450, can use the 560 gear set and wind up with a farmer-engineered low-low. I doubt if the factory would bless or a dealer would do such a modification. There is alot of wheel torque when such a modification is used with the TA.

If somebody actually wants one, I will see if I can still find it somewhere in the old shop. Bought an H with it in 59, never liked it because it slowed reverse also. Found some normal gears and took it out. All it consits of is a different reverse-low, low-second on countershaft, and reverse idler gear. Let me know if anyone wants it bad enough for me to find it.
