I have two questions for the experts. First, for tractor pulls what would be the best gear to pull in. Second, is there a special tool or technique for adjusting the belt tensioner on the water pump. Thank you.

I got the belt all adjusted up on the water pump. on the top generator bracket there are two holes where you would bolt it to the head and that looks like the only adjusment I have. I had the starter and generator rebuilt and got the tractor to start and run on carb cleaner (typical Farmall, they always run) but the butterfly that operates the throttle was hung wide open. Upon further inpection you could see that the carb was pretty rusty. In the 30 seconds that it ran it didn't smoke and it had plenty of oil pressure. Thank you for the info.

I can't help you with pulling but to adjust the belt you hold the collar with one hand and turn the fan.

Thanks for the advice on the pump. I was also wondering if the generator belt is adjustible. Thank you.

If it's got the factory setup on the generator it has an adjustable sheave too.

Lot's of them have been changed with an automotive type adjustment, which is limited because of the hood.

By the way, do not get the fan belt too tight. It is hard on the water pump bearings. 1/2 inch deflection pressing your thumb at the mid-span of the belt is right. It is a lot looser than you think it should be.

If it does not run hot and the generator will work the belts are tight enough.

Get the collar freed up if it is stuck. Sometimes the set screw is stuck or broken off. It is wise to work carefully even if you have to pull the radiator to get the water pump off to get the collar freed up.

If you feel the need to pound on it, use a brass punch and gentle blows with a hammer.
