I know what you mean. I went to the steel place today for a piece of 3.5" ID pipe 1/4" wall, 4" long, they wanted $47, $47 for a 4 lbs piece of steel. I called all the hydraulic places around here, all the construction companies, ,boiler repair, plumbing supply... The boiler place had 4" ID 4" long for $16, other then that nothing.. I sifted through my older starters for the motor cases, no luck, I gave up on the clean looking fix and made a spacer for the crossbrace with some c channel and boxed it in, doesnt look too horrible... Total cost, about $2 in welding rods...
Total aggravation... PRICELESS...

Alright, alright.

Generic does not work. Been there, done that.

The piece has to be correct and it has to secure on the right side of the bolster because it will get in the way of the PTO linkage if it is "too long".

Further, I refuse to "wobble" out that expensive bolster with a silly bolt. Also, I will not hang that heavy plow off of a soft home made tinker toy. :>(

So, I'm 100 miles from the closest salvage yard (that could possibly "might" have one if we can find it), or a 115 miles from the closest dealer, who didn't stock it at all.

Yes, a CAT II pin only cost $13; this big one must be in less demand or something because of it's size; I dunno.

Anyway, a new one off the shelf, flown in from Kansas City in 18 hours and delivered to my door just seemed like the right choice at the time. :>(

Hey, I guess if they had what you needed when you wanted it, and delivered it...it's worth the $.
Saves you a trip and giving the $ to the Arabs via diesel fuel. I agree would much rather have the right part than wear out much more expensive parts.

You gotta admit though that it seems like robbery.

Not being a purist has its advantages, I would have put a grade 8 bolt in it and called it done would have worked just as well (I think).

Had a stone break the 2" foglight on the truck and went to get a replacement lens/bulb this morning.
Nope. It's a sealed unit they say. $389.00 for the part.
Looks like I might be getting my deer with the truck this year if it gets foggy.

Now they are real proud of that pin and as for me it would have ben a trip to the steel supply house and a stop at the machine shop if i realy wanted that fancy tappered end then a trip to the welding table and rummage around the bottom of the welding table for a pice of flat strap the drill press cutting tourch and a quick pass of 1/8th -7018 at about 125 amps total cost about 25 bucks

The local welding shop wants a minimum of $50 for any work. You have to have a PHD to make Allan's pin. Thats not something a regular machanic can make.

Uffda.
So much for supply & demand setting the price.
I can't imagine there's a line forming to get one.

$75!?!?!?

WHY, and HOW could a pin cost that much?

I guess I would look for a used one, but sounds like you couldn't wait for it, huh?

It is a supply and demand thing.

We are all glad that Case IH continues to manufacture and sell parts for obsolete equipment.

All manufacturers price obsolete parts based on demand. If there is a high demand, the price is lower. If they only sell a few per year they get the price up to where it pays them to make a manufacturing run, mark and stock, take up warehouse space, and continue to inventory a very slow moving item. They probably still take a beating on very slow moving parts, and they drop a few every year. That's why experienced people here recommend buying from Case IH when they have it. Collectively, all the owners in the country will keep more parts on Case IH shelves and available if we buy from them rather than alternatives.

Allen's part in particular is one for which there are several aftermarket options including used, generic three point pin, bolt, and home made. He knows this but wants to keep his tractors as original as is practical. $75 was practical for him. He knows he could have had a used one, or made one, but new was available, he wanted it, and he bought it.

There is no pressure from Case IH to buy their parts, so if you don't like the price you don't buy the part. Whether you can get it elsewhere has nothing to do with it. If they don't choose to stock it, you can do without or you can have it manufactured by someone else. Compare those prices. I believe they price parts a low as they can within their business plan. Talk to the owner of a piece of machinery where the company has gone out of business years ago, they'd love the high prices.
