I just got a 52 H. I flushed the tank, which really wasn't bad. Installed new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It starts up only if you hold your hand over the carb intake side. It will then run for a couple of secs.and then die out.It is getting good fuel flow from teh tank. I am thinking the carb is gummed up. The manifold isn't sucking air anywhere?

Did you clean the screen filter in the fuel line? If not disconnect fuel line from carb. then screw out the elbow from carb. There is a screen built in the elbow. Good luck, Chuck

The needle valve is sticking. If possible, remove the carburetor drain plug, or open the drain cock if it has one. Remove the fuel inlet line from the carb, and then spray some carb cleaner into the fuel inlet until it runs out the drain hole. This will not take the place of rebuilding the carb, but it might get you going, and it may be all it needs.

How are the intake manifold gaskets? If they are leaking, it could be the cause of your troubles. Try spraying some WD-40 around the intake when she's running, if it continues to run as you spray, replace the manifold gaskets & your troubles will be gone. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
