How hard is it to revove and rebuild the oil pump on an H Farmall? Would it be better to buy one and just change it out?
Thanks Jeff

They are pretty easy to rebuild. The most important thing is the headspacing. The gears will, over time, wear into the cover face. Eventually the pressure output goes down. The cover has shims ( gasket ) reducing the gasket will give you some more pressure. Taking the cover off and surface grinding the inner face flat will do more. But if your bearings are worn real bad, your pressure will still show real low. But they will run a long time with pretty low pressure.

Very rare for one to need much doen ot it. If oil pressure is low you may have a worn crnakshaft or bearings.

I have never heard of them being for sale in the last 8 years. No one seems to have NOS, and I have not heard of any one rebuilding them professionally. I may be mistaken on this, as I am not in the market for one. From what I know, gears are available, though pricy, and rebuilding is not difficult. Remove pan and unbolt the pump Common problems may include scored end plate, and worn loose shafts. Milling components to tighten endplay is possible (I think .0008-.0012 would be a good end clearance. Gaskets are thin, and used to set final clearance. I hope this helps, JimN

Forklift, I agree it is supposed to be that easy. In the real world it very seldom is. Usually the pumps are stuck in there pretty good and will require a good deal of coaxing to get them to drop.

AH Ha Loren, I did not say that it would not take a BFH or a crow bar or coaking to get it out. Though most I have worked on differ from yours they usally come down pretty good but I was just trying to tell the poster that it was not a complete teardown to get at it. P.S. Hows the new Auction site treating you?
