Hi all, has anyone heard anything about Galaxy tires, good/bad or otherwise? Any recommendations for what I should put on the back of my '53 Super A as far as size goes. It doesn't see a whole lot of use but it does a little bit of ploughing, some mowing, and a bit more snow plowing. I'm sort of thinking of sticking with 9.5 x 24 unless there's a good reason not to. Any thoughts? Thanks, tractorsam

Thanks all. I appreciate the suggestions and as I can't seem to find anyone to say a bad word about them I think I'll go with the Galaxy's at $175 a piece rather than the next cheapest at around $250 a piece. The tractor has 9.5's on it at the moment and I think I'll stick with that. Thanks again, tractorsam

And so, Tractorsam, there you have it; 11 responses - 11 different opinions, which is the norm for us tractor forum Farmall buddies. (But, we all like each other.)
Conclusion: Do as you please.

i put new galaxy rear tires on my 1486 ten years ago. they are just an ok tire nothing special. they seem to be wearing ok but they are weather checked some and the 1486 rarely sets outsidethe tires are made in hungary on old bf goodrich molds. they are 30 degree lugs.

at work we have galaxy beefy baby tires on the front of our backhoe. alot of local flagstone quarries also use this tire on skid loaders. we use the 12 ply tires. they hold up to punctures extremely well. we get about two years out of a set (about double what we get out of the factory set that comes on each machine)we pay a premium for them.

The question I have is, Will the tractor be strong enough to pull the taller tires? I like the look of the bigger tires myself but these tractors dont have alot of ponys under that hood. Now if your running a transplant engine 135ci. or 153ci. that"s a whole different story!

Sam: I have no experience with Galaxy's, however I'd look for a 24" tire with 19 or 20 treads each side around the circumference of the tire. On those small wheels you will get better traction.

My Super A has 15 year old, 9.5x24 Generals with 21 treads around the circumference. My 140 has 12.4x24 Firestone Field and Road and 16 treads around the circumference. My 130 has a mix, both 12.4x24, however the Astro has 20 treads and a Polish tire has 16 treads. On hard ground my Super A with no weight, liquid or solid will give the other two with wheel weights a hard run on a drawbar pull. That changes if flotation is a factor. That Astro tire has excellent traction, and is roughly 25 years old with not any weather checking.

The Firestones have only been on my 140 roughly 6 months. During plowing, disking and field cultivator work, I can visably see those tires slipping in loose soil. The treads on those Firestones are chewed far worse than the older tires on the other two tractors. I wont comment on the Polish tire on 130 as it's only been on there two years and during that time has not seen a lot of heavy drawbar work, but the Astro has. When using the 130 in heavy pulling the 16 tread Polish tire will spin far quicker than the 20 tread Astro.

Personally, I'll never put anything but 9.5 on my Super A. The C-113 engine is loaded with that. I'll go larger with C-123. My advice is count those treads, very important on those small circumference tires. 38" is a whole different ball game.

Measure inside the rim where the bead seats. If you are measuring 9" to the outside, then you probably have an 8" rim. The specified size for an 8" rim is a 9.5 and 10" rim is 11.2. It's very common however to find an 11.2 on an 8" rim.

If you have 9" wide rear rims, I'd go with the 11.2-24; if you have 8" wide rear rims, I'd probably go with 9.5-24.
Personally, and this is not an important consideration, I like the way a Super A looks with 11.2 tires.

I have one 11.2 (yeah, only one) on the back of my BN and it seems like an OK tire. It's the 45 deg bar pattern, I would like to find another one to match but it looks like galaxy doesn't make them anymore, just the 35 deg bar.

Getting back on topic I wouldn't hesitate to buy Galaxy's.

Tractorsam, I have a set of Galaxys on the rear of my 966. Have no complaints. They have been on 10 yrs now, and still have 40% tread, only had 2 flats, both were punctures.
Each rear corner is carring 750 lbs of cast wt. They are Bias ply tires not Radials. I would buy them again! Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I've heard of the Galaxy brand, but have never seen any. I put a pair of imported "Akuret" brand tires on the rear of my M. I didn't like the idea of imported tires on a classic U.S.A. made tractor but the differance in price convinced me that it was O.K. $180 each for the Akuret, versus $250 for Goodyear. That was several years ago. I've recieved several comments on how good those tires look. I would bet that those Galaxies will be just fine.

I have a pair of 6.00-16's on the front of an H. They seem to be fine. I have run through some rough stuff and no flats to speak of. Neighbor has 12.4-28s on the back of one of his tractors. He does a fair amount of road driving and after 2 years of heavy use tires look good. I have been told they are a very cheap tire but I have nothing bad to say about them.

I like the way the 9.5's look. I wouldn't go bigger than 11.2. Dave
