Idle Adjustment SA Solved.....

I have done this procedure before with wide open throttle and adjusted the clevis going to carb.

The problem was the whole steering support column is moving around changing the idle characteristics of the motor !!! If I push foward on the steering column the idle goes down to where it should be ! My question is, is there supposed to be some sort of bracket from the electrical panel or steering post to the touch control to support that whole assembly from moving around. When I installed the steering support column I used big flat washers in the bottom of the electrical panel but I quess thats not enough. I am in the process of finishing the restore of this tractor and would appreciate any input !

Scotty,
As City-Boy said - the battery box furnishes support for the controls and the steering column.

On my '51 SA, there are two bolts inside the battery box near the top (just above the battery) that screw into two matching threaded holes at the top corners of the electrical box. (One of those bolts also grounds the + battery cable). There are also 2 small bolts on each side that attach the outside bottom of the battery box to matching flanges on the tractor.

The battery box is supposed to lend lateral support to the steering column on a Super A. It braces the column. mike

The steering column should not be moving around. Is it bolted down solidly? Using bolts which are too long, or putting washers under the support column can lead to it being loose.

Mornin Andy, The washers are on the inside the electrical panel. Im wondering if there should be some type of support or bracket that goes from the electrical panel to the touch control to control to prevent any wobble ?

Not factory. But none of mine wobble without additional support. Something is wrong with yours.

Thanks Andy, Maybe I can make something up from the top of the electrial panel to the touch control over the top of the battery box.

Why not take the steering post off and see why it is loose? Or am I not thinking of a Super A? Does the steering post not mount on the transmission casting?

Your correct Andy. I had this whole tractor completely apart and I didnt see anything wrong with the steering post but I will look again tonight, maybe I have a broken weld somewhere.

Another thing to look for is new bolts bottomed out in the holes, almost tightening up but not quite.
