Howdy, Boys. There is a guy here locally who wants to sell me an M with a recently rebuilt engine which is equipped with Firecrater pistons. Is that a good thing? What do these pistons do in the way of a horsepower boost for an M, all other things being equal? I have not seen this tractor yet, so I don't know if it has an "X1" suffix or not - therefore, it could have a distillate head or a gasoline head. It is about a 1950 model. Much obliged for any information. mike

They increase horsepower, but you're really probably wondering, "By how much?" Well, it depends. Depends on the quality of the rebuild. Depends on how well the rings seat during breakin. Could be zero. Could be...

Not cubic inches. Only bore and stroke can increase displacement.

My M has the 4 inch flat top pistons, standard is 3 7/8". On a dyno my M will put 46 horsepower. Rated HP for an M is 36. I would imagine the firecraters would increase the HP even more, up to maybe 50?
