Guys, how do I keep mice out of my house!!?
They eat through everything...
I have 2 dogs, so Cats are not an option. I think that is why we are geting them now because of the stupid new neighbors piling tons of trash outside and have loads of cats to scare the mice into our safe haven of a house.
I cant have a cat because of the dogs, and I'm not too fond of cats, and its hard to find a good mousecatcher anyways.
I know that cucumber peels keep out ants, and it works fairly well. Is there any nonposion, readily available well-safe substance that mice dont like?
I just seen 4 of them chasing each other in my bedroom!!
I'm not a wussy, but they can harbor all kinds of diseases and are good climbers..
Anyone ever heard of pewople getting bit while sleeping?
I have my dogs in here for now, but I dont think they will help me out much =P
I got 3 livetraps set for now.
My dad used to feed the shrew we had, dogfood, and it kept the micecount down, but he got his head taken off by one of the older micetraps my dad has. I prefer to use the livetraps and setem free on my way to work. didnty really like the shrew either, 6 of one, a half dozen of another in my book.
URGH!! I cant cleep now...

[quote="LA in WI"](quoted from post at 00:59:43 12/31/09) Picture this scene with wire-checked corn:

Just before sunset.

Clear skies.

Slight breeze.

Corn about 6-10" high.

Freshly cultivated.

You are looking from east end of field, with sun glistening off (or thru) the leaves.

You can see all kinds of geometric rows, at many angles.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

It sure was... although Dad quit check-row planting by the late '40s, I still remember seeing it well into the '50s, at least in NE Iowa. I know Dad never used check-row after going to a mounted planter on the C, I think in 1950, but it had the roll of wire with the planter. When Mom left the farm (mid-'90s) there was a very nice pull type 2 row IH planter left in the barn with the wire and it didn't look like it had ever been un-rolled or the stakes pushed in the ground.

Check out farmtek.com they have a good selection of poisons. They also sell the bait stations to go along with them.
I have a dozen set up around the house, garage and wood shed.
If that don't do the trick call a pro or get used to sleeping with them.

I don't know how close your neighbor is, if he's too close mice will always be around. The key to no mice is to destroy their habit -- no weeds, trash, or piles of junk. I doubt if your neighbors mice pay much attention to the cats -- there's simply too many for the cats to control, the mice don't notice until they are being eaten, then it's too late. I don't have any cats or mice, in my house or shop.

Well first off find and fix the hole that they are getting into your house thru if it is and OLD foundation then they will go wright thru the old sand mix cement like a boring bar. Clean up around your house and if ya don't like the smell for a dead rotten mouse don't use poision as they will die in places you can't get to BTDT . We go thru this every year i run around the outside and find the holes dig down and mix up some mortor mix fill the holes in and plaster that area with a good hard mix , if i live long enough i just might get the old foundation completly covered .

another trick if you are using snap type traps, for bait use a small piece of tootsie roll, roll it up and press it on the bait tab, then smear a little peanut butter on top of the tootsie roll. the mice lick the peanut butter and then when they get to the tootsie roll the have to pull it loose and that triggers the trap.

Good idea, Glennster.

Along those lines, I use peanut butter in the traditional Victor mouse traps. I always put extra peanut butter on the bottom of the bait tang, then push it down (so it smushes against the wood) before I set the trap. This way the sneaky mice can lick the bait off the tang, but then they have to stick their heads between the tang and the wood to get the rest of it. Sooner or later the old noggin bumps the tang, and (as my daughter used to say when she was 4), "SNAP, SNAP, SNAP!"

I'll give the Tootsie Roll idea a try this weekend.

If you can"t sleep, KILL the mice. Your release of live mice down the road only adds to other folks possibly having to deal w/them. The board has given some good advice, although the antifreeze is not good. Use a DEADtrap. For small mice/voles/moles a good tactic is to attatch a small piece of cloth to the bait hook and apply peanut butter to the cloth. The smaller rodents will tug on the cloth while eating the bait and WHAMMO. Otherwise, the smallest rodents can simply like away at the bait and off they go. Cats and dogs can get along, just like us Lutherans and those Catholics. The catch and release idea for other critters creates the same problems for others down the road, be it raccoons, squirrels, or elephants. Take care of your problems on your property = being a good neighbor. Now if someone would take your idea of catch and release, I will watch for a Farmall 340 w/wide front; good TA; power steering; complete/straight sheet metal; no rusted rims; no oil leaks/smoke; good tires; fast-hitch; dual ports; good hydraulic pump...better get some coffee brewed and sit by the highway and wait..wait...I"m waiting.

Oh by the way, don't call the mice stupid if they are outsmarting you. It makes you look bad.

No one seems to believe me but I have been mice free for 5 years now . I just use the little plug in electronic rodent repellers. About $20 for 5 at big lots. Was covered up with mice before using them.

Everyone says they dont work, but I just smile and enjoy my mouse free house.
ps. they seem to keep roaches out too, but not spiders.

My mother-in-law bough tus all one years ago. No effect. Maybe all the ones she bought were defective. Since you can't hear them how would you know?

Maybe it is worth trying again.

If you don't like cats, get a snake.

Cats and dogs can get along. It is surprisingly easy to find good mousers. Find sommeone who has a good one and get one of her kittens. Raise it with the dogs. If the dogs kill it, try again.

It sounds like you don't like killing mice. My experience is "kill 'em or live with 'em".

I have also heard of filling a bucket with some water then putting oats in the bucket, the oats will float so the mice will jump in for a snack and then ker-splash and they're done for..don't ya just love this time of year when they decide its time to move in..LOL...Jim

I like the traps, but what you really want is to find out where they're gettng in. You have to think like a mouse. They can crawl through a hole the diameter of a nickel. This time of year, they're unbelievable. I removed the stone on our chimney. The attic was exposeed over night. The varmints must have been watching me and run in the minute I got off the roof. I caught 7 mice in less than a week; three in one day. STUDY your house EVERYWHERE, basement walls, attic, roof, siding, window frames, service/pipe entry areas. You will be surprised the little holes you'll find. We had a slight on-going mouse problem here(30 year old house in the woods), after searching I found some panneling on the garage wall that was loose enough along the bottom to allow mouse access. Another spot was where my vent stack exited the side wall, into the garage, and out the roof. The builder had cut the hole a little too big, leaving a large enough hole on top where you wouldn't notice it without carefully looking(ladder&flashlight). Be persistant. Good Luck!

Glenn

Mornin Jay, When I rolled in my Super A for a rebuild 3 years ago into my garage I didnt know it but I had a mouse nest in the clutch housing. Needles to say I managed to get mice in the house because the garage is connected. I ended up going down to our local grain store and bought these bars of poison with bird seed in them and put them up in the attic and out in the garage where the animals couldnt get to them. They worked quite well, I also snagged a couple of them in a 5 gal bucket partially filled with antifreeze :")

Good Luck !

A home made, very effective trap that I've seen in Canadian fishing cabins consists of a bucket half filled with water. Poke a nail hole in the center of each end of a pop/beer can and string a piece of baleing wire through these nail holes. Then stretch the wire tightly between the two bucket bail attaching points so the can rotates freely. Smear some peanut butter on the can and position it at the middle of the wire, then lean a small stick along side the bucket so mice can crawl up the stick to the wire, crawl across the wire to the can and get on the can to eat the peanut buter. The can will rotate due to the mouse's weight and the critter will fall into the water and he's done for. Trap doesn't need resetting before it's ready to catch another. In a good night half dozen or so mice can be caught. The trap also automatically tells you when it is really in need of emptying!

My dad does a variation of that trick. He just sprinkles a little cornmeal on the water. If you have cats you can leave the water out. The mice can't jump out of the bucket. They seem to get in all by themselves.

My chicken coop mouse trap is a bucket with a lid that I cut a 2" hole in the top. Put a couple gallons of used oil in it, with a layer of milk replacer over the oil.
Empty the whole thing in the Spring, and count the mice!
For some reason the mice seem to prefer milk replacer over ground chicken feed.

That sounds simple and effective. Another told by my grandmother is to set out two shallow pans. One filled with drinking water for the critters, the other filled with a mixture of filely ground grain and plaster of Paris. What a way to go!
