FARMALL 100 TRANSMISSION BEARING NOISE

I just put a belly mower on my 100 and tried it out last night. When I engage the PTO shaft, it makes a pretty audible grinding/whining sound. I mowed for a few minutes until it drove me crazy. It only makes noise when the PTO is engaged. I assume it is in the bearing for the transmission output shaft to the PTO. Can I replace this bearing from the top cover or do I have to split the tractor to get at the transmission? Any comments appreciated.

Nick, It sounds more like a bearing in the PTO assy. I would think if it was in the transmission shaft it would make the sound whenever the tractor was moving. I think the 100 is the same as the A, so the PTO assy comes out the back of the transmission. If you need to replace bearings in the transmission, you will have to split the tractor as the transmission shafts all come out the front of the transmission. Roger

You may be right about that because I don't remember the noise before I installed the right angle PTO assembly for the mower. However, the noise sure seemed to be coming from forward of the pto, under the gear shift area. I will remove the PTO assembly and see if it persists.
Thanks for your reply
