NEW TO THE RED--SMTA

Although my hobby's in the past have been more concentrated around the Green, I'm a fan of any equipment manufactured 50+ years ago that still operates...regardless of the color.

That said, I'm going to look at an SMTA this weekend, at least that's what they say the decal says. After reading several posts to learn a bit more about these, I have a few questions:

Do all SMTA's have Live PTO & Live Hydraulics? If not, how can I tell by looking at the tractor if either of them is Live?

If this one has the TA (it sounds like the TA wasn't necessarily built into every single SMTA decal'd tractor), and if it's bad, what kind of $$ are we looking at to rebuild it? Also, does it have to be rebuilt, or will the tractor run/operate fine without the TA being functional?

Thanks for your time. Bill

I understand your dilema. I was a JD guy all my life as was my Dad. I ran a M on a baler but that was about it. A few years ago a retired farmer said he wanted to sell his old tractor, it was stuck as the muffler was bad and it was outside. He thought it was a Super M. I asked how much, not interested myself but in case I found someone who was, and he said $100. It had after market 3 point also. Turned out to be a SMTA. Bought it to part out but then just had to get it running and then running better and , well you know the rest. TA was out on the low side when I got it and I ran it that way for a while, had to split it to replace the PTO disconnect and decided to to TA also. I put in rebuilt ramp and rollers as mentioned below and seals, TA clutch was ok and it is great to have TA working. I have live hydraulics and live PTO. Hydraulic pump is in front of distributor on right side, should have hydro tank under the rear of the gas tank and may have a "christmas tree" valve for 2 way hydraulics. As mentioned PTO if live will have "bubble" on back and a long lever on the right side. TA lever is on left and shorter. Rather complicated to adjust clutch and TA but when done is great. I did the TA rebuild for less than $200 but labor was all mine. They are a nice tractor and guess you could paint it green if you want.

You asked about costs. Alot depends on whether it is your labor or someone else's. And if it is someone else's, you may be sold items you don't need. Most TA failures can be traced to the ramp and rollers. The rollers can't advance far enough to lock up and create the power shift. I am hestitant to give prices because I haven't bought a TA or parts in a while. Ball park says $150 for ramp and rollers, and $500-600 for compelte unit.

You might consider other work while you have the tractor split in three parts. That would be the clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. There is also a driven gear on the IPTO that sometimes gets wobbley.

Test the TA by pulling back the TA lever, selecting fourth gear, and easing out the clutch pedal while at rest. A better test is to do some plowing and shifting back and fourth between the high and low range. The wrong oil can cause symptoms similar to a bad TA.

You have already received some very good answers to your request. If the serial number plate is still on the tractor is should have the chassis code of SM-TA and a six digit s/n between 60001 and 83523. Letters which may follow the six digits could also define the configuration of the tractor as it left the factory. The letter "P" indicates IPTO attachment without T/A. Letter "R" indicates T/A with provision for transmission-driven PTO. Letter "S" indicates T/A with provision for 540 IPTO. This information is from Guy Fay"s IH Tractor Data Book. Hope this helps. Good Luck and enjoy if it pans out, Hal

The super MTA was built only in 1954. Be sure that the serial number plate agrees with the decals, and also check the casting codes. 1954 would be a "Z" casting code.

Not all Super MTA's have the live PTO, but they all had live hydraulics unless it was optioned without hydraulics. Some were prepared for the IPTO, some were given the transmission driven PTO, others were prepared for the transmission driven PTO, and others were given the IPTO. The transmission driven PTO will look like any M or Super M PTO unit (more rounded and fairly small in size) while the IPTO will be a large more or less rectangular housing with a little breather cap on top. If the TA is bad, it may be able to be operated in direct drive (lever forward) mode but if the entire unit was destroyed, no speeds would work.

bill, welcome to the red side! actually, there probably isn't a " side" you'll find when you talk to a lot of these red guys. they are just a bunch of darn good people. use that smta and you'll love it. good power and easy to operate. (don't forget that foot clutch though!) good luck.
