Old A

1) the clutch isnt working right - gears grind after idling in nuetral and depressing the clutch then shifting into gear. Gears dont grind when shifting from gear to the next forward or reverse as long as clutch isnt released while in nuetral. This tractor has been dormant for quite a spell - could be just a rough clutch plate and will wear off or does it need adjusting? or repair?

2) This A runs off a magneto and does not have any lights or light switch or starter. Can I put lights on it and run them off the magneto?

My brother got this tactor a couple years ago in non running condition. He has my grandfathers A with plow, disc, cultivator, original manual AND Sales slip from 1946! Anyway, I'm building a new house and was bugginh him about letting me use that old B---- (as dad would put it) and told him he could even store it over at my house for safe keeping as now it sits in a dusty dirty machine shed. Well - he said he would sell me his project tractor for what he paid and I agreed after he said it would probably only a couple hundred dollars to get running. SO I says DEAL - we load it up and haul it to his buddy's house for a tune up. I tell him I just want to see what it will take to get running - dont worry about the starter etc. didnt want to spend money on it until we found our ir was sound - he looks it over and says I didnt have to worry about the starter kuz they aint no starter and they aint no place to install one. Here I am expecting the same tractor as grandad's - Oops on my part. Anyway he says it'll be $900 to fix it up. I stutterd and my brother just give it to me to help take the ouch off a little bit, All I have to pay is the repair bill.

Bottom line is - I have an old stripped down model - no starter - no generator - no lights - not even a kill switch yet - just a magnito and a home made crank. Dont have a clue what oil is in the tranny - but I'll check it out -

I'm assuming it's very possible 90wght - sounds like it wants 140wght?????

By the way - it runs great with new carb and rebuilt magnito. The magnito came from Grandad's tractor - Dad said they switched it over to generator etc. years ago but he thinks it had lights even when it was using the magnito. What would I have to do to put lights on this tractor?????

You can run just a battery, but then you have to put the battery on the charger when you get home. There's the distinct possibility you'll misjudge how long your lights will run, and you'll get stranded out in the middle of the field in pitch black night.

It MAY get a little better with use, as the flywheel and pressure plate get polished up again.

What oil do you have in the tranny... there is a noticeable difference in how quickly things coast the a stop with 140-weight oil, vs. 90-weight oil!

And, NO, you can't run lights and accessories off of the magneto. You need a generator to operate those.
