My 806 just recently started not wanting to go into or stay in high gear. It seems to try to go in but just isn't getting all the way there . When I put in high and let the clutch out it just grinds and once in a while it will move. I hope it is just linkage. I researched the archives and it looks like linkage trouble usually affects reverse unless someone tried to adjust the problem out of reverse than it could affect high on the other end. Am I right? All I want to know really is when I pull the top platform off what do I need to be careful of and watch for. I've seen comments about catching springs and a part that could fall into the transmission. Can I get to all the internal linkage from the platform? The guy I bought this tractor from a year or so ago said he replaced the shifter fork so that might be when the linkage would have been adjusted. Am I looking at any expensive replacement parts? I guess I had more questions than I thought. Harlen

You may be lucky and just have a lot of slop in the external linkage. Remove the cowl from above the dash and remove the platform. Examine each and every part from the end of the lever down to the top of the range transmission cover. Replace anything that is even questionable. Once you've got it to the point where there is absolutley zero slop in the linkage, adjust the shift linkage, clutch linkage, dump valve, transmission brake, and TA linkage exactly by the book. It should now shift like new. If it still jumps out of gear, then you'll need to work on the parts underneath the range transmission cover, which really isn't a hard job.

K B other then the clutch free travel that the book and throw it away the way i have explained many times before is sooooo much easier as there is no masuren no fiddeling around and 90% of the time people never get it wright. And a clutch adjustment ain't going to help him on this one , as if he has low and rev. then my thinking is more then linkage , the least it would be is a broke roller or a wore shifter cam.and if that ain't it he's got bigger problems .

I know, Vet. I've got my own ways of adjusting them too, but it's just too hard to explain to someone who may not understand exactly how these tractors work, especially when you can't show them in person. If you follow the book by the letter, they'll come out decent, just takes longer and the dump valve won't be adjusted quite as nice as it would be the way the old IH mechanics adjust it. I like to recommend making all of the adjustments at the same time, just because you might as well do them all while you're at it.

Well with out me seeing the tractor we will have to start from the top . First make sure that the High Low shifter lock sets in nuteral where ya have to squzze the safty latch to get it out of N then remove the cowel and see if ya have ANY slop in the linkage from the shift lever to shift rod , FIX that, then remove the KICK plate on the steering support ( the panel that has two 3/8th bolts holding it in place ) and check for ware in the linkage there and fix or replace. if ya find much slop and it does not take much to mess up the shifting on one of these tractors . IF all is well from the top on down to the Range transmission cover then we must go deeper , so now we pull the floor plate and remove any hyd. lines for the side remotes if it has them next we remove the side cover on the left side of the tractor it is the one with the cliped corner you will loose about a gallon of hyd fluid . This cover exposes the rev. sliding gear and shift fork , unbolt the top cover and also block up the park lever . IF this 806 has had a spring loaded park lock installed then you must place a 1/2 inch nut not a nut that will take a 1/2 inch wrench but one that needs a 3/4 inch wrench . Caution must be used if it has a spring loaded park lock as it will remove finger if it slips . IT is a big help to have and extra pair of hands while removing the top cover as one must cautch the pices and parts that will fll out on the rev. shift fork like a small woodwrothe keyand the shifting fork you must come stright up with the top cover . Once it is off then you check for broken rollers wore out cam and detent plate broken detent spring and roller woren shifter shaft wore key broken roll pin wore top cover . Next also check for a ft input bearing by wiggeling the top shaft . Now if the shifter collar is bad or the output is bad then Huston you got a BIG problem . Now it is posable that the problem is in the T/A when it was installed someone did not do the job correctly or that the quill in the T/A was machined wrong and this also will make them not want to go into high range but everything else works fine . Like i said i can not check this out for myself so we will have to do this over the key board .
