Cub Governor?

My previously ever-dependable '49 Farmall Cub has recently developed an issue. While traveling back to the house at low speed, the engine suddenly began to race at a terrifying rate. I shut it down, and pulled it back to the garage. Now it starts fine and runs normally for a few seconds, then begins to race at a high rate that inspires me to shut down immediately, lest something explode. I am assuming something is wrong with the governor, but have no experience with governors and would appreciate any suggestions as to how to proceed.

Also check the two screws in the throttle shaft in the carb. They may be just hanging on by a thread.

I seem to remember my Dad's 49 cub either raced or would not speed up (can't remember) but the problem was the spring on the governor end of the governor rod broke. We replaced it with an old bed spring and I think that bed spring is still on there. Not sure if thats your problem but it might be a good place to start.

Broken spring = Won't speed up above idle.

Failed thrust bearing or several other internal mechanical failures = Overspeed.

My Cub would behave similarly--RPMs wouldn't pick up right and then it would race out of control, but I could still throttle it back with the lever. Pulled the governor and all that but the only thing I ended up replacing was the spring. The old one was bent/distorted somehow. Don't remember exactly how, it's been about 8 years.

Thanks Bob, It was a long time ago. I no longer have the cub and I couldn,t remember how the linkage worked.
