Tach disassembly

Any of you folks ever took a 66 series tachometer apart without distroying the chrome ring and the lense? I bought one that looks good, but is reported not to work. I"m gonna try it myself before I dismantle it. I need to replace the lense and the chrome ring on mine. I bought this one for parts.

If it does check out to be bad, I thought I"d cut the tub just behind the chrome ring.

Any suggestions?

Mitch

I"ve taken them apart by gently going around the back of the chrome ring with a small screwdriver and prying the crimp open. PATIENCE is the key. Just do a little at a time. You may have to go around it a couple of times. There is usually a seal under the glass. You can also re-crimp it again after fixing it by gently going around it with a pliers.

I need a lens for the tach on my 966. Are they available somwhere. Or do I have to make my own new (flat) one?

I would use a dremel tool (or =) with a mini cutoff blade in it to remove the bottom of the chrome ring (which grips the body) This allows disassembly. To put it back together I would hot glue the chrome ring in 3 places (with modest amount of glue) then assemble. After placing in the dash I would use Lexcel brand clear acrylic sealer around the chrome to keep water out. Good luck, JimN

Thanks Jim! That'd save a good tub.
