I know early H"s had a small-diameter pto shaft (1-1/8"). I always thought that all 1939 and 1940 Hs had the small one. I noticed on a supplier"s website where they listed SN range for the small one that it is 45614-117999. That would put it at late 1940 to late 1942. Is that right? What about 1939 and early 1940? Different again? Surely they had pto, didn"t they?

Thanks, Trent

I have 3 1942 H's... The two early 42s have the old style engagement, one had small shaft, one had large shaft. The late 42 has the newer style engagement and a large shaft.

It seems to me the very early one's had a different front end on the PTO shaft, but it would still ahve been 1-1/8 as the 1-3/8 were a later development as hp increased.

By the way, you know when you face the PTO it turns the same way as when you face the front of the engine. Both turn clockwise. Why is that?

I always thought it was because PTO type equipment was first designed to be driven off the front of the engine of mobile equipment so the input was CCW. Therefore the tractor makers reversed the shaft out the back to match. Or is it just because the shaft out the back needed a gear reduction so it was convenient?

yeah, different again. I know on the M the first ones the engagement lever was directly above the shaft, then about 1940 it was slightly offset.

Not all H's and M's were delivered with pto shafts, it was an option, so some had it put on later. It is not unusual to find an eary tractor with the newer shaft.
