After disking and seeding 40 acres with my Farmall 966, I was in the process of dragging the field to cover the clover seed and my drag bogged down so I went to shift from High Fourth to Low Fourth and it came out of High but would not go into Low or High setting but it would go into reverse without any problems. I used reverse to get off the field. I am thinking this is some sort of linkage problem but it was dark thirty when this happened and I was without a flash light. Has anyone else had this issue where the HLR lever moves into the Forward positions but it is like it is still in neutral?

On my 756 I have had the roll pin come out or break several times. I also had the arm that is on the shaft that goes through the trans top come off I had to wield it on.

Pull the cowel and look at the linkage and either the as i call them the cub cadet tierod came apart or the a nut fell off or like Mag said the Croverd pin down on the collar came out , this is not a rolled pin or roll pin it is a tappered groved pin . I learned many years ago that one should have a flashlite that works with him while working by his self far away from the barn or pickup . I now never leave the house with out my mini mag lite on my belt .

If the lever moves freely then MAGMUN is right. Or even a ball joint or pin came out somewhere. If you can still feel the detent then a shifting fork or a arm under the cover broke. That cover is underneath your feet under the floor board. Reverse is a diffent fork and linkage.

Thanks everyone of the quick responses. It seems the general consensus is I lost a roller pin or something came off the linkage. The High Low lever does move completely free. I'll have a chance this weekend to tear it open and figure out what fell into the dirt. I'll reply back with what I find out.
