i am getting ready to start dismantling some of the engine on my M i'm restoring. and i'm about ready to remove the distributor. Are there any tips i can use so i can make timing it easier later on? And is this a difficult job?

Thanks Ryan Olson

ryan, carefully remove the distributor and mak one ear on the coupler and mark the corresponding mark on the dist. drive. i got ahead of myself, also mark the dist. and governor mount casting as you can then line up the timing like it was. dead timing an m is not that hard by the book, but your thinking right trying to save some time at the end. good luck.

Ryan - Before you remove the distributor, rotate the crank so the distributor rotor button is pointing to the #1 tower on the distributor cap. The timing mark on the crank pulley should then be aligned with - or very near - the pointer on the front cover. If necessary turn the crankshaft a bit to align the pulley timing mark with the pointer. Then take a magic marker or similar and mark the postion of the rotor button on the side of the distributor.

Now when you reassemble the engine, before you put on the rocker box turn the crank so BOTH valves on the #1 cylinder are closed and the pulley timing mark is again aligned with the pointer. Now set the rotor on the distributor to the mark you made and stick it back in - you should be all set!

Note: The dist rotor will turn a bit as the distributor gear slides into the cam gear - make sure the rotor is aligned with the mark you made when the distributor is fully seated.

bob said it better by a long shot. do like he says. you will be turning the engine over during repairs, so you have a chance of dead timing anyway. good luck.
