Starter on this tractor a 62' locked up other day. Put tractor in fourth gear and rocked and it would start and turn over again. Am only a poor mechanic on a good day. What may have caused this? And what might be simplest fix to happening again. Got to take carbuerator off and clean and was going to try to fix both while at it. Thanks

The very same thing happened to me with my 140. First, I replaced the pinion gear on the starter drive. Next, with a long file through the hole where the starter attaches, I filed smooth the edges of the damaged teeth on the flywheel to help the teeth from the drive engage the flywheel teeth more easily. I rotated the flywheel with a "jeweler's screwdriver" as I went around the ring gear. (I did not want to split the tractor.)
Worked like a charm.....

Gary's thoughts are correct if tractor has been parked for awhile.

The more common item is worn and chiped teeth on starter drive and ring gear. Having said this it may work well a long time yet if you can tolerate the ocasional lock up. Another good way to free these up is loosen starter mounting bolts. Just back them off 1/4", you'll hear it click into place. When I was a teenager, everyone of my dad's Farmalls had a 3/4 end wrench in tool box. It was standard equipment. One is not always able to rock the tractor in high gear.

Indeed Hugh! When I was a kid "standard equipment" on every Farmall I ran was a 3/4" combination wrench hung from the starter rod loop.

Likes The Farm: Might be a sticky starter bendix. More likely however the bendix pinion teeth are worn. Usually a new bendix solves the problem.

However if the flywheel ring gear teeth are also badly worn a new bendix can actually make the problem worse. Only solution then is to replace the ring gear.

Had the same thing happen on a farmall 300 I bought.

It had set a while, 2 years, before I bought it.

Starter locked twice early on but after using it awhile it has not caused a problem since.

Might have just been gummed up.

Does your 140 get used much?

Gary

It sees moderate use. Mostly light rotary mowing and discing. Runs pretty good
